Paris Hilton [The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson; 03.03.09]: It’s really all about the belt, when you think about it. Or when you don’t think about it. B+
Ricky Gervais [Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, 10.17.08]: A genius, obviously, but he’s almost too comfortable here. And it’s weird—with Ricky playing to a British crowd I feel like I’m wearing an away jersey at a home game. They had him first; no matter what I do, they’ll always get him more than I will. He’s friends with Jonathan too, so there’s no awkwardness—a potential problem for a guy who based his entire career on perfecting awkwardness. Ross is ok (goofy and curious like Conan but more handsome), but he’s not going to help an American watching on YouTube (he would be dumb to try). I’ll take Ricky on Letterman because there’s more reverence there. It’s clear Gervais is trying to impress someone he looks up to when he’s on the Late Show.
Sarah Silverman was also on this episode, which was mind-blowing (my mind is easily blown). Gervais and Silverman in the same studio—interacting with each other in a humorous manner! Rumors of her bombing were greatly exaggerated (only a few jokes totally dudded), and it was fascinating to see an audience meet her for the first time. When backed into a corner, she resorted to being the cool kid in class, cracking wise to an invisible American audience who couldn’t give two shits about geezers like Ross. I imagine there’s some British blogger out there thinking irrational and proprietary thoughts about Silverman. Well, probably not. Her veneer is formidable, but the distance leaves simple questions up for debate. I mean, does Sarah Silverman think The Office is amazing? B+
Jenny Lewis [Late Night with Conan O’Brien, 10.07.08]: Song nearly matches the hat. B+
